About the 2023/24 call

DeepMind and Makerere University renewed their collaboration to fund two scholarships in machine learning for the 2023/24 academic year. The call, updated on 31 May 2023, built on scholarships awarded in the 2021/22 and 2022/23 academic years.

The scholarships supported students joining the MSc in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science track at Makerere University.

This is an archived scholarship call. The application deadline was 30 June 2023 and applications for this round are closed.

Eligible programme

Applicants had to apply for Makerere University’s MSc in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science track.

Proof of a programme application was required when applying for the scholarship. A scholarship could only be awarded after the applicant had secured admission to the programme.

What the scholarship covered

The award provided:

  • full tuition fees;
  • a stipend for living expenses;
  • a laptop;
  • medical insurance;
  • travel to Makerere University for international students; and
  • support to attend an artificial intelligence conference, with mentorship from the artificial intelligence community.

Eligibility

Two scholarships were available for the 2023/24 academic year. The call was open to citizens of Uganda, citizens of other East African countries and international students from Sub-Saharan African countries.
