Makerere and University of Washington PhD Exchange Fellowship

About the 2024 programme

The Department of Computer Science at Makerere University launched the 2024 PhD exchange programme with the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington in Seattle, United States.

The programme supported Makerere University PhD students undertaking a one-year research visit at the University of Washington. It began in 2021 and had supported five PhD scholars by the time of this call. The programme was funded by Paul Maritz.

This is an archived fellowship call. The application deadline was 15 September 2023 at 11:00 p.m. East Africa Time and applications are closed.

Support provided

The fellowship provided:

  • a monthly stipend for the one-year stay in Seattle;
  • a laptop; and
  • travel to Seattle.

Three positions were available for 2024, with travel expected in January 2024.

Eligibility

Applicants had to:

  • be citizens of Uganda;
  • be current PhD students in Computer Science or Software Engineering at Makerere University; or
  • if not yet admitted, secure PhD admission by October 2023.

The programme preferred applicants who were within the first 1 to 12 months of their PhD studies.
